Should private schools be required to offer 50% seats at government-regulated fees?
CJP Editorial 24 May 2026 Ends 14 June 2026
The Question
India has over 400 million school-age children. While government schools are free, private schools often charge fees that are out of reach for middle-class families. The RTE Act already mandates 25% reservation for economically weaker sections, but middle-income families are left in a gap — too rich for government schools, too poor for elite private schools. Should the government mandate that private schools reserve half their seats at capped, government-regulated fee structures?
