Should India ban single-use plastics completely by 2026?
CJP Editorial 24 May 2026 Ends 7 June 2026
The Question
India generates over 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. The 2022 partial ban on single-use plastics was a step forward, but enforcement is weak and alternatives are expensive. A complete ban by 2026 would require massive change from manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. Supporters argue the environmental cost of inaction is too high. Opponents say it will hurt small businesses and low-income street vendors who rely on cheap packaging.
